The Antiquity of Man: Artifactual, Fossil and Gene Records Explored
by Michael Brass
Book Description: Palaeoanthropology and archaeology are fascinating, vibrant, and multi-disciplinary areas of research encompassing everything from isotopic laboratory work to down-and-dirty hands-on excavation. The discipline has grown tremendously since the time of Darwin and continues to yield new important revelations with each passing year. Recently a new variant of creationism has arisen to challenge evolution: Hindu creationism, as advanced by its most prominent proponents Michael Cremo and Richard Thompson. The Antiquity of Man explores the basic tenets that run through all fundamentalist writings. It is the only published work to provide an in-depth critique of Cremo and Thompson's work, and to examine creationism from the perspective of palaeoanthropology and archaeology: the application of genetics, our relationship with archaic hominins and chimpanzees, and the origins of modern human behavior.

An Australian Phanerozoic Timescale
by Gavin C. Young
Book Description: This book gives a new global perspective to the Phanerozoic timescale, by bringing together extensive Australian and overseas research on biostratigraphy, geochronology and magnetostratigraphy. For the first time, correlations are established between Australian and European biozonal schemes for the entire Phanerozoic, by integrating local and international biozones, isotopic ages, and magnetic polarity intervals. The compilation relies on tie points using tightly constrained isotopic and biostratigraphic ages. It is the first Phanerozoic scale whose time calibration is heavily weighted by modern application of isotopic dating of the 1980's and 1990's, especially variants of 40 Ar/39Ar and U/Pb zircon-dating, which have radically rescaled some parts of geologic time. An Australian Phanerozoic Timescale gives the essential framework for resource exploration, geologic modelling, and reconstruction of past environments and land-sea configurations during the last 545 million years of earth history.

Australia's Lost World: Prehistoric Animals of Riversleigh
by Michael Archer
Book Description: In northeast Australia lies one of the most significant fossil deposits in the world--Riversleigh. Here, the remains of many thousands of weird and wonderful prehistoric animals have been superbly preserved in the limestone outcrops. In this award-winning work issued for the first time in the United States, the three principal scientists on this remarkable excavation explain the vast environmental and geographic changes that have occurred in this area since Australia broke away from the continent of Gondwana, and how the animals on board this raft evolved through the ages. Photographs and evocative artwork bring to life the teeming tropical world that once populated the now arid wastes of Riversleigh, and the authors discuss some of the unusual techniques used on a dig, how to recognize fossils, how to date them, and how to reconstruct extinct animals from them.

Basic Palaeontology
by Michael J. Benton
A comprehensive introduction to all aspects of palaeontology. It starts with a discussion of the basic principles of the subject and goes on to describe the principal features of all the main fossil groups including plants, invertebrates, vertebrates, trace fossils and microfossils. Written by two leading palaentologists, the text includes many modern ideas resulting from an improved understanding of evolution and the fossil record, palaeobiology and palaeoecology. The final chapter summarises the history of life, introducing large-scale evolution and extinctions.

Dragon Hunter: Roy Chapman Andrews and the Central Asiatic Expeditions
by Charles Gallenkamp
Roy Chapman Andrews was never much of a scholar, and anyone who looked at his high school report card might have foretold an undistinguished future. But, from an early age, Andrews's ambitions lay outside the social norm; an ardent fan of Robinson Crusoe and a devoted outdoorsman, Andrews wanted nothing more than to be an adventurer. He got his chance when he talked his way onto the staff of the American Museum of Natural History in 1906, under whose auspices, 15 years later, he was to mount the first of his central Asian expeditions. This decade-long program of exploration took Andrews and his team into the heart of the Gobi, one of the last uncharted regions on earth.

Convinced for ideological as much as scientific reasons that humans originated not in Africa but in Asia, Andrews spent much of his time in the field seeking evidence of early man. That search would prove fruitless, for, as biographer Charles Gallenkamp notes, "nary a scrap of genuinely ancient human bone was ever retrieved by the Central Asian Expeditions." What Andrews and his colleagues did find, however, has propelled dozens of scientific missions ever since: huge caches of dinosaur bones at places such as Mongolia's Flaming Cliffs. These fossils helped demonstrate geological connections between Asia and North America, and they added dozens of new species to the paleontological record.

All the while, Andrews contended with bandits, corrupt officials, invading armies, disease, and other dangers. After finishing Gallenkamp's vigorous book, readers will understand why Andrews should have served as the model for the movie character Indiana Jones--who, if anything, pales by comparison to the real thing. --Gregory McNamee - Amazon.com
