Art
and Nationalism in Colonial India : Occidental Orientations
by Partha Mitter
Partha Mitter tells the story of Indian art during the Raj, set against
the interplay of colonialism and nationalism. The work addresses the tensions
and contradictions that attended the advent of European naturalism in India,
and traces the artistic evolution from unquestioning westernisation to
the construction of Hindu national identity. Through a wide range of literary
and pictorial sources, the author balances the study of colonial cultural
institutions with the ideologies of the nationalist movements which followed.

Indian
Art A&I
by Vidya Dehejia
This book is a worthy addition to Phaidon's excellent Art and Ideas
series, which provides overviews of the major art traditions of the world.
India is vast (the size of Europe); the birthplace of great religions,
including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism; and the home of sophisticated
civilizations dating back more than 4,000 years. These factors combine
to give India one of the longest and most complex art traditions of the
world--and one of the hardest to make accessible to the general reader.
Vidya Dehejia, curator of Indian art at the Smithsonian Institution,
is up to the task. She sets the scene with an invaluable chapter explaining
ancient Indian theories of art and aesthetics, including the responsibilities
of the viewer. Most important is the realization that "the consistent fabric
of Indian life was never rent by the Western dichotomy between religious
belief and worldly practice"--hence the easy coexistence in India of extreme
religious asceticism and the overt eroticism that pervades temples like
Khajuraho and Patan. The book proceeds in a grand sweep, from the ancient
cities of the Indus valley, the development of Buddhist art (which by the
12th century had faded away in the land of its birth), the glorious paintings
of Ajanta, the luxury of Mughal art and architecture, art of the British
Raj, to today's artistic ferment. Clear and well-written, with nearly 300
well-chosen color illustrations, this is an extremely useful introduction
to India's vast artistic wealth. --John Stevenson - Amazon.com

Art and Architecture (World of Art)
by George Michell
The art of Hinduism constitutes one of the world's great traditions,
as alive today as when the first images of Hindu gods were fashioned out
of stone more than two thousand years ago. George Michell's invaluable
survey looks at the entire period, covering shrines consecrated to Hindu
cults as well as works of art that portray Hindu divinities, semidivine
personalities, and mythological narratives. Amazon.com

Orissa
Revisited
by Pratapaditya Pal (Editor), Marg Publications
Book Description The artistic traditions of Orissa are among
the oldest and richest in the subcontinent. Recent archaeological fieldwork
has revealed several sites from the Stone Age to the Early Historic period.
The history of Buddhism in the region goes back to the time of Emperor
Ashoka (3rd century BCE) with a continuous art heritage up to the 13th
century. Apart from sculpture and rockcut caves, Orissa developed a distinguished
tradition of temple architecture. The Orissan genius has also been manifest
in painting, crafts, and dance, including the varied tribal cultural expressions.
Despite such extraordinary achievements, no single volume provides an
overview of the diverse contributions of generations of Orissan artists.
As the accompanying table of contents demonstrates, this book is wide-ranging
in scope, covering all periods and many forms of art. Apart from emphasizing
the past, the essays focus on present artistic activities, traditional
as well as the modern.
