Frontsoldaten
: The German Soldier in World War II
by Stephen G. Fritz
The experience of the British and American common soldier in World
War II has been extensively studied. Not so, at least in English,
that of his principal opponent, the German Landser (infantryman). Fritz
draws on both published and unpublished material, little of it previously
translated, to make up for the deficiency. The German soldier survived
far more rigorous training than his Allied counterparts (which explains
much of his superior proficiency). Booklist

German
Infantryman at War 1939-1945 (At War)
by George Forty (Editor)
Book Description: This book looks at the lot of the average
Landser, the German "Grunt", who fought through Blitzkrieg, in the Western
Desert, and in the horrific frozen wastes of Russia against the most implacable
of foes.
Most of the photographs in this book come from private collections and
have not been published before, many from Feldwebel Gerhard Sandmann who
joined the German Army at Northeim in September 1939 and fought from May
9, 1940, through Belgium, Holland, and France. He was then involved in
the capture of the Channel Islands, saw service on the Eastern Front, was
wounded, and convalesced in Berlin before seeing service in the Occupation
Army in Holland. He was captured by the U.S. Army in Belgium in 1944.
WWII German Infantryman at War uses experiences such as these to evoke
what World War II was like at the sharp end by way of the soldiers' own
stories and images.

Hitler's
Mountain Troops : Fighting at the Extremes
by James Lucas
Warfare in the mountains, with its extremes of temperature and treacherous
terrain, is unique and difficult. Hitler's Gebirgsjaeger, specially chosen
troops of men who usually came from the Alpine regions, frequently succeeded
in winning (or at least escaping) where others would have failed. Using
anecdotes from surviving veterans, and photographs of men, landscapes,
and weapons, follow the troops from Poland down to Tunisia, chronicling
their excellence, dedication, and esprit de corps. Amazon.com

Soldat
: Reflections of a German Soldier, 1936-1949
by Ted Brusaw (Contributor), Siegfried Knappe
A dutiful soldier and a decent man, Siegfried Knappe served as a German
officer on all fronts of World War II in Europe. His uncommonly reflective,
historically detailed memoir provides a fresh perspective on the war and
helps us to understand how ordinary people became the pawns of an unspeakably
brutal regime.
