The King's Pines of Idaho: a Story of the Browns of McCall
by Grace Edgington Jordan
King's Pines refers to the giant trees of New England that the King reserved for the masts of his great navy. The Brown family emigrated from that area very early, but the lumber term stayed with them. Grace Jordan's original aim was to write mostly of Carl and Ida Brown and of their children, but as she proceeded, she found another image appearing on her canvas: the town of McCall, Idaho itself. So her plan had to be altered, and she wrote of the family and the village that has known them for more than 50 years. Built at the south end of the Payette Lake, McCall became a resort. Aided and encouraged by the caring of the Browns, McCall has become a uniquely satisfactory place to live, self-dependent, spirited, and beautiful because it is natural and unaffected. This is the story of rural Idaho, of strong people and rugged land!
