Adak: The Rescue of Alfa Foxtrot 586
Adak: The Rescue of Alfa Foxtrot 586
by Andrew C. A. Jampoler
Book Description: In the tradition of great tales of men against the sea, this story offers a compelling look at courage and commitment in the face of certain tragedy. It is a powerful blend of human drama and real-life naval operations, but unlike most books in the genre, its heroes are airmen not seamen, and most survived their ordeal. Published on the twentieth-fifth anniversary of Alfa Foxtrot 586's fatal mission as a tribute to those lost, the account was written by a naval aviator who has flown the same aircraft on the same mission from the same air base. The aircraft is a P-3 Orion on station during a sensitive mission off the Kamchatka Peninsula in the north Pacific. The time is mid-day on 26 October 1978. Andy Jampoler takes readers into the cockpit of the turboprop as a propeller malfunction turns into an engine fire, eventually forcing Jerry Grigsby to ditch his patrol plane into the empty, mountainous seas west of the Aleutian Islands. His fourteen crewmembers, strapped in their seats, expect the worst--and get it. The aircraft goes down in just ninety seconds, taking one of the three rafts with it. A second raft, terribly overcrowded, soon begins to leak.

The flight crew's desperate battle to survive is told with the authority, drama, and sensitivity that only someone with the author's background could provide. He draws on interviews with survivors, searchers, and even the master of the Soviet fishing trawler that saved the living and recovered the bodies of the dead. He also draws on recordings of radio communications, messages in the files of the state and defense departments, and the patrol squadron's own investigation of the ditching. Everyone who likes survival epics and enjoys reading sea and air adventures will be entertained by this engrossing true story. 240 pages. 11 photographs. 5 line drawings. 3 maps. Notes. Bibliography. Hardcover. 6 x 9 inches.

Black Cat Raiders of World War II
by Richard C. Knott
Book Description Thanks to the PBY's daring pilots and their effective tactics, the slow outdated Catalina patrol bombers became the scourge of Japanese shipping in the South Pacific during World War II. Painted black and hunting at night, the Black Cats, as they were called, are credited with sinking or disabling hundreds of thousands of tons of cargo vessels, troop transports, and warships. Curiously their exploits were known to few outside the naval aviation community until the publication of this book in 1981. This testimonial to their magnificent performance is told by an experienced flying boat pilot, who has pieced together the fascinating story from reminiscences of the men who flew the long, arduous missions and from official navy records. It is an inspiring tale of fearless men in machines ill-designed for combat who wreaked havoc on a dangerous and merciless adversary. Illustrated with more than sixty photographs and detailed line drawings, it is a book to be savored by those who like their adventure stories to ring true.

by Burke Mees
Book Description: Written for pilots who want to transition from land-based aircraft to seaplanes, this guide is designed to teach the special maneuvers that are required for the FAA's seaplane rating and also gives insight into the important practical differences between flying landplanes and seaplanes. Each step of flying a seaplane is presented in logical order, starting with preflight and proceeding through taxiing, takeoff, landing, and postflight procedures. Special attention is given to the issues involved in handling an aircraft on the water, such as conditions for takeoff and landing, and docking, beaching, or ramping a seaplane.

Escape of the Pacific Clipper
by George L. Flynn
In 1941 a flying boat was trapped in New Zealand after the bombing of Pearl Harbour. The valiant crew brought the craft back to New York by an extraordinarily circuitous route travelling some 30,000 miles under strict radio silence and often pursued by the enemy. A little known tale of derring-do which was completely overshadowed by the high drama being enacted on the world's stage. Sounds great? Perhaps, but it is poorly written, full of typo's, and the account of the action is largely fiction. Don't bother. Dropbears.com
