The American Cut Glass Industry : T. G. Hawkes and His Competitors
Jane Shadel Spillman
This authoritative book presents new information about the late nineteenth and early twentieth century cut glass industry in Corning, New York. The recent discovery of a mass of archival material relating to T.G. Hawkes and Company, including thousands of letters, has enabled the author to research business practices in the glass industry in more detail than ever before. Using this new information, together with her already considerable knowledge, Jane Shadel Spillman has produced the first book on American cut glass to go beyond the glass and examine the workings of the industry itself, including labour relations, sources of blanks, special orders for the White House, Hawkes' representation at the Paris world's fair in 1889, and communication between the cut glass industry and silver manufacturers such as Gorham and Tiffany.

Florence's Glassware Pattern Identification Guide: Easy Identification for Glassware from the 1920s Through the 1960s
by Gene Florence
Depression Glass is as popular as ever and the glass from the 1930s through the 1960s seems even to be gaining ground. Collectors have depended on Gene Florence's books since 1972 for accurate information and values. His new Glassware Pattern Identification Guide, a book that has been needed for many years, will make a great companion for his other books. It includes every pattern featured in his Collector's Encyclopedia of Depression Glass, Collectible Glassware from the 40s, 50's, and 60s, and Collector's Encyclopedia of Elegant Glassware, as well as many more - nearly 400 patterns in all. A gorgeous close-up photograph of a representative piece for every pattern shows great detail to make identification easy. With every pattern, Florence provides the names, the company which made the glass, dates of production, and even colors available. This new guide will be the ideal reference for all glass collectors and dealers, as well as the novice, and a great resource for years to come. 8.5 X 11. 1998 values.

Fifty Years of Collectible Glass 1920-1970 : Easy Identification and Price Guide : Tableware, Kitchenware, Barware and Water Sets
Tom Bredehoft, Neila Bredehoft
Beginning collectors will have an easy time with this practical guide, but those with more experience will find it no less valuable. In Fifty Years of Collectible Glass 1920-1970, Tom and Neila Bredehoft focus their expertise on all kinds of stemware, decorations, and accessories. The first two sections are divided by pattern type--separate categories are devoted to knops, roses, birds, and wheat, for a total of 45 different segments. In the accessories department, you'll find coverage of items from candy jars to console sets separated by type, rather than pattern. Newcomers to glass should be sure to check out the helpful descriptions and line drawings of stemware pieces in the first few pages. Since most of us don't intuitively grasp the difference between a sherbet and a cocktail glass, or know the exact shape of a touraine, the Bredehofts have thoughtfully provided clear and concise definitions that make an excellent introduction or refresher course. The eight bright and glossy pages in the center of the book are a visual treat, showcasing items from many major manufacturers, including Heisey, Duncan and Miller, and U.S. Glass.
Small identification photos are plentiful, and the occasional illustration or old advertisement adds a nice bit of variety. Even in black and white, the pictures of various patterns come through cleanly--only a very few are fuzzy enough that a magnifier may be needed to clear things up. --Jill Lightner Amazon.com

Venini Glass: 1921-1986
by Anna Venini Diaz De Santillana
Book Description:
Thanks to its authoritative authors and completeness of content, this volume will long remain the prime reference source on the extraordinary production of Venini, considered by many to represent the zenith of glassmaking art in the 20th century. The initial essays illustrate the peculiarity, taste and iconography of Venini production and examine its enormous influence on the art of glassmaking in Europe and the United States. Then comes a complete catalogue of all the production of Vetreria Venini, in 224 entries, starting with activity of founder Paolo from 1921 to 1951, to his son-in-law Ludovico de Santillana, from 1959 to 1986, dividing the catalogue by the designers who collaborated in the realization of the Venini prototypes, including Bianconi, Buzzi, Zecchin and Scarpa. It then offers a facsimile reproduction of the historical Vetreria Venini catalogues, with the capi serie and inventory numbers. The appendices include a glossary of technical terms, a chronology of the exhibitions, a biography of Venini, a chronology of the master glassmakers, brief biographies of the designers and a general bibliography.

The book demands to be purchased because of the intrinsic beauty of the pieces reproduced (many unknown to the general public) and the richness of the appendices, making the book a must for scholars and especially for antique dealers, merchants and collectors (especially in the United States, where Venini glass is famous and where the most significant private collection exist). The strength of the volume is the completeness of its cataloguing which also includes the lighting systems and the reproductions of the three historical catalogues (blue, red and green) for identifying and cataloguing the pieces in readers' collections. The authors, in addition to the editor, daughter of Paolo Venini and recognized expert in the glassmaking art, include Helmut Ricke, director the Decorative Arts Museum of Dsseldorf, and Attilia Dorigato, director of the Glass Museum of Murano.
