Born in West Berlin in 1962, he began his motorcycling career in 1986 as a precision tool mechanic. Bernd was with Stein-Dinse Bot-Guzzi until 1991, where he built a 153kg, 998ccm, 107 bhp 10,000 rpm racing Guzzi, and then worked for Team Green Popko Kawasaki (Germany's largest Kawasaki dealer) building very successful machines for the 125 and 500  MX World Championship. 

He also fettled machinery for  Super Motard, 500 four stroke machines (winning two German championships),  600 SuperSport European Championship, World Superbike Endurance, International  Superbikes, and SuperCross machines for visiting Amercan riders.
