1955 Maico-Mobil Model MB200 Scooter

Possibly one of the most luxurious scooters built in the 1950s, the Maico-Mobil was an exceptional exercise in streamline styling, carrying the most extraordinary aluminium bodywork and fairings over a tubular space frame. The coachwork alone weighs some 115kg. Built by Maico-Werke in Wurtemberg from 1950, the Maico-Mobil was considered " a motor-car on two wheels!". Early versions had a 150cc two stroke engine, a 175cc engine of 1952 being followed with a 200cc engine in 1954, this producing all of 11hp at 5,000rpm. The Maico used telescopic front forks, hydraulic shock absorbers and most novel 14" offset mounted wheels, presumably in anticipation of fast changing of flat tyres on the side of the autobahn. The Maico-Mobil carries a spare wheel at the rear, and a 9.5 litre fuel tank, with two litres reserve. With a 4 speed gearbox, and full windshield the scooter was intended for long touring and it also has a Pagusa moulded and sprung red rubber seat.
This remarkably intact example was last registered in Queensland in 1960, and the registration label is still attached. It is in unrestored condition, however it runs and is generally complete. This version has a kick start, six volt electrics, and only 9669 recorded kilometres. The engine was overhauled in 1960 prior to the machine being laid up, however the clutch is stuck from long term storage and some mechanical attention will consequently be required. Presently painted blue, the body could well be stripped and polished for a really unique effect! In 1953 Willem Dussel competed a circumnavigation of the world on his Maico-Mobil, comprehensively equipped - his machine, with driver and luggage weighed in at 300kg.
