The new luxury touring motorcycle
from BMW, the K 1200 LT, has arrived.
Redefining luxury motorcycle touring, the
K 1200 LT offers a level of rider and passenger comfort previously unavailable
and combines such comfort with traditional levels of BMW motorcycle performance,
handling and safety.
The K 1200 LT enters the top of the motorcycle
touring market replete with a fully integrated body design incorporating
voluminous luggage capacity comprising a top box with 50 litres of capacity
capable of swallowing two helmets and side cases of 35 litres capacity
each. The K 1200 LT also features a rider cockpit which provides finger-tip
control for the many functions and two very comfortable heated seats with
a full backrest on the pillion seat.
The drive train and suspension of the new
BMW K1200 LT should be familiar to fans of the German marque The engine
is a modification of that used in the most powerful BMW, the 130 bhp K1200
RS sports tourer. In the K 1200 LT the engine produces 98 bhp and 115 Nm
of torque at just 4750 rpm. This allows the 378kg (wet) 5 speed K 1200
LT to sprint from 0 to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds and achieve a top speed of
197 km/h, all whilst achieving fuel consumption of just 5 litres per 100
km on a combined cycle.
The frame, suspension and brakes for the
new luxury tourer are also drawn from the highly successful K 1200 RS,
obviously with appropriate modifications given the larger dimensions and
greater weight of the K 1200 LT.
BMW Telelever rear and Paralever front
suspension also unique to BMW are both carried forward to the new luxury
touring bike and the brakes have been enhanced with the use of a four piston
calliper and a larger brake disc on the rear. In addition the frame concept,
which has the engine resting in its own aluminium frame, ensures ultra
low vibration transfer to the rider.
Standard features for the fully equipped
K 1200 LT include ABS brakes, heated grips, heated seats, a reversing aid,
On Board Computer, electrically adjusted windshield, cruise control and
a radio cassette Hi-fi system complete with CD stacker mounted inside the
right side case.
The BMW K 1200 LT enters a sector of the
motorcycle market which has been short on choice and is certain to draw
additional buyers to the segment. Unfortunately BMW Australia is supply
constrained with a limited number of K 1200 LT motorcycles available this
year.
BMW Australia's National Motorcycle Manager,
Olaf Breukers believes that the new luxury tourer will attract new customers
to BMW and provide a product progression for a number of existing BMW owners.
"The arrival of the K 1200LT offers a BMW product which sets new standards
in the luxury touring market and also provides a new top of the range product
for our customers who have sought a direct replacement for their K 1100
LT motorcycles.
With the arrival of the K 1200 LT, BMW
is able to offer both a K Series and R Series luxury touring motorcycle
to our customers. With the R 1100 RT already having won accolades for its
combination of comfort and performance, we are confident that the K 1200
LT takes the luxury part of the equation to new highs."
Supplies of BMW's new luxury touring motorcycle
begin to arrive at BMW motorcycle dealers from early April. Forward orders
and interest, resulting from the showing of the motorcycle at the Melbourne
and Brisbane International Motorshow, have already ensured the successful
introduction of the K 1200 LT to the Australian market.
