Tom
Swift & His Airship by Victor Appleton II
Hardcover from Applewood Books
ISBN: 1557091773
Swift's ingenuity prompts him
to build an airship, but when Tom tests the ship something goes wrong and
both Tom and the ship crash to the ground.
What Tom's about to find is truly out of this world!
It's the grand opening of APOGEE, the world's first space hotel, an
orbital space station designed expressly for the tourist trade. As Swift
Enterprises is a major investor in the project, and provided much of the
necessary technology, Tom and Sandy have been invited to be among the first
guests to visit!
When they arrive at the APOGEE they experience weightlessness, learn
about the high-tech nature of the hotel (including the robotic wait and
cleaning staff), and play a game of zero-gravity badminton. But as Tom
explores the ship he begins to notice some strange happenings. And when
a billionaire guest of the hotel turns up missing,Tom suspects foul play....
Tom. Bud, and Yo are on the S.S. Nestor, a Swift Enterprises
research vessel, to witness Mr. Swift testing his submersible, the Verne-1.
Mr. Swift plans to use the Verne-1 to place a network of seismometers
on the sea floor to detect underwater earthquakes, volcanic eruptions,
and other phenomena that might generate tidal waves on the ocean's surface.
But when an unexpected storm hits and the S.S. Nestor looses contact
with the Verne-1, it's up to Tom to save his father.
Tom's been training his entry, SwiftBot, for the upcoming Robot Olympics
-- a major event being sponsored by the White House's Office of Science
and Technology. Teenage inventors from around the country will be bringing
their homemade robots to compete in a series of athletic competitions.
The Road Back, an antiscience terrorist group, has issued a statement condemning
the event, and Tom hopes that the tight security at the Robot Olympics
will keep TRB from causing trouble. But no such luck. Someone is playing
dirty . . . and things are going to get dangerous.
A MIGHTY TASK faces Tom Swift Jr. in his exciting, new project - colonization
of the moon. To accomplish this astounding feat, Tom must perfect his latest
invention, the matter maker, which will be essential for life on the moon.
Not only must this amazing solartron manufacture oxygen and fuel, but also
food and other materials in sufficient quantity to support the moon pioneers
for some time. From the moment the young scientist-adventurer starts planning
for this daring venture, danger and mysterious happenings plague almost
every step of his progress. A crushing blow comes when he discovers that
one of the solartron's precious secrets has fallen into the hands of an
unscrupulous scientific group. Unwilling to admit defeat, Tom and Mr. Swift
proceed to their Outpost in Space to conduct crucial tests on the matter
maker. Just as success seems assured, the young scientist suffers the most
devastating blow of all when his father mysteriously vanishes in the dark
void of endless space. Frantic, Tom instigates a search that leads to the
farthest planets. As you read this taut, nerve-tingling story of Tom's
exploits, you will live every tense moment of his triumphs and electrifying
adventures.
