You may have seen the quiz which includes the question: After which animal are the Canary Islands named?
Sometime around the beginning of the first millenium King Juba II of Mauretania sent an expedition to the tiny group of Pacific Islands off the NW coast of Africa which encountered ferocious dogs, the precursors of the Presa Canario breed. Canaria is Latin for canine, and this is the derivation of the name given to the islands.
