Blanc, Beur: Rap Music and Hip-Hop Culture in the Francophone World
by Alain-Philippe
Durand
Paperback from Scarecrow Press
Book Published: October, 2002
Synopsis
Rap music was born in America in the early 1980s. Over the last decade
it has not only grew in popularity within the United States, with rap music
soaring to the top of the music charts, but it also influenced other cultures
around the world. Black, Blanc, Beur is about the emergence and growing
notoriety of rap music and hip-hop culture in the French-speaking world
(France, Quebec, and Western Africa). It provides an introduction to many
forms of expression of hip-hop cultures (rap music, hip-hop dance, and
graffiti/tagging). Since its arrival in France, rap music experienced immediate
and ever-growing success, going from an underground sound to becoming the
second largest market in the world after the United States. Just as American
rap crossed borders, French rap influenced artists in the rest of the Francophone
world. In addition to a foreword by Adam Krims, a noted rap authority,
this volume has contributions by some of the most renowned hip-hop scholars
on both sides of the Atlantic and addresses hip-hop from the perspective
of various disciplines: African studies, anthropology, cultural studies,
ethnology, French and Francophone studies, history, linguistics, musicology,

Hip
Hop America
by Nelson George
Although it's been part of the cultural soundscape for over 25 years,
hip-hop has been the focus of very few books. And when those books do pop
up, they tend to be either overtly scholarly, as if the writer in question
has just landed on some alien planet, or a bit too much like a fanzine.
If there's anyone qualified to write a solid, informative, and entertaining
tome on the culture, politics, and business of hip-hop, it's Nelson George.
A veteran journalist, George is one of the smartest and most observant
chroniclers of African American pop culture. Much as he broke down and
illuminated R&B with his acclaimed book The Death of Rhythm and Blues,
George now tackles hip-hop with the clarity of a reporter and the enthusiasm
of a fan--which is fitting, because George is both. A Brooklyn native,
he began writing about rap back in the late 1970s, when the beats and the
lifestyle were not only foreign to most white folks, they were still underground
in the black communities. Hip Hop America is filled with George's memories
of the scene's nascent years, and it tells the story of rap both as an
art form and a cultural and economic force--from the old Bronx nightclub
the Fever to the age of Puffy. Highlighting both the major players and
some of the forces behind the scenes, George gives rap a historical perspective
without coming off as too intellectual. All of which makes Hip Hop America
a worthwhile addition to any fan's collection. --Amy Linden - Amazon.com

The
Hip Hop Generation: Young Blacks and the Crisis in African American Culture
by Bakari Kitwana
Book Description: The Hip Hop Generation is an eloquent testament
for black youth culture at the turn of the century. The only in-depth study
of the first generation to grow up in post-segregation America, it combines
culture and politics into a pivotal work in American studies. Bakari Kitwana,
one of black America's sharpest young critics, offers a sobering look at
this generation's disproportionate social and political troubles, and celebrates
the activism and politics that may herald the beginning of a new phase
of African-American empowerment.

Revelations
: There's a Light After the Lime
by Pastor Mason Betha
Book Description:
Imagine having it all: money, celebrity, success. Imagine leaving it
all behind -- to answer a higher calling.
Sparked by his work with Sean "Puffy" Combs' Bad Boy Entertainment,
Mason "Mase" Betha's meteoric rise to fame is one of rap's great success
stories. In addition to performing on such hit singles as 112's "Only You,"
Puffy's "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down," Notorious B.I.G.'s "Mo Money, Mo Problems,"
and Mariah Carey's "Honey," Mase sky-rocketed as a solo artist whose languid
vocal style set him apart. His debut album, Harlem World, went platinum
and his next album, Double Up, was eagerly awaited. But just as he was
poised to sign a multimillion-dollar deal with Bad Boy, Mase walked away.
Mason Betha is now a pastor, inspirational speaker, and founder of a
nondenominational group called S.A.N.E. (Saving a Nation Endangered) Ministries.
Having turned his back on stardom, he reveals in this fascinating memoir
the rhyme and reason behind his choice to leave a glamorous life of extraordinary
wealth and influence to become a pastor with a powerful message for America's
youth. Thought-provoking and illuminating, Revelations is an undeniable
testament to the enduring power of faith -- and to the limitless possibilities
in a life transformed by God's guiding hand.
