Andy
Goldsworthy's Rivers & Tides
Andy Goldsworthy's Rivers and Tides is a truly beautiful, Finnish-German
2001 documentary about artist Goldsworthy, a Scotsman whose medium is nature
itself and whose preferred studio is the outdoors, particularly where water
forever flows, rises, and/or retreats. The soft-spoken, secluded Goldsworthy
is seen hard at work making ephemeral sculptures out of bits of ice in
the trees, or building tall, mysterious cones from loose rock, which stand
like spiritual sentinels in forests and on shorelines, overgrown by plants
or swallowed daily by high tides. Filmmaker-cinematographer Thomas Reidelsheimer
goes to great and sometimes inexplicable lengths to make visual corollaries
to Goldsworthy's ideas about underappreciated relationships between light,
color, movement, balance, and fluidity of form in the real world, making
Rivers and Tides a lively and always surprising cinematic gallery. Some
of Goldsworthy's most miraculous natural installations--stone walls that
snake through hundreds of feet of forest and stream, for instance--show
up in the last half-hour. --Tom Keogh - Amazon.com

He foreshadowed his career by making his own toys growing up, took
artistic inspiration from the solar system, drove a convertible in winter
wearing a sheepskin for a coat, and was responsible for the biggest controversy
to hit Grand Rapids, Michigan. Such was the long and colorful career of
Alexander "Sandy" Calder, inventor of the mobile as an art form and creator
of the ubiquitous giant abstract sculptures that grace many of the world's
cities, including the aforementioned one in Michigan. This 55-minute video
biography takes the viewer from his 1898 birth through his death in 1976,
using his prolific art--more than 16,000 pieces--to help tell his story.
In between shots of the lyrical moving mobiles and the majestic multistory
animal-like sculptures there is footage of a playful Calder performing
with his pieces and talking about work, as well as interviews with art
experts and friends such as playwright Arthur Miller. --Kimberly Heinrichs

DVD from Miramax Home Entertainment
starring Salma
Hayek, Alfred
Molina
directed by Julie
Taymor
This is one you'll want to see twice. Db.
Salma Hayek makes up for many bad movies with her fierce performance in this sumptuous film. Hayek plays the Mexican surrealist
painter Frida Kahlo, whose tempestuous life with her unfaithful husband, muralist Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), drives the story of Frida.
Maverick director Julie Taymor (Titus, the Broadway stage production of The Lion King) pulls out a wealth of gorgeous visuals to
capture everything from the horrific bus accident that damaged Kahlo's spine to her and Rivera's trip to New York City, where Rivera's
political leanings ruptured a commission from the Rockefeller family. Though the script spends too much time telling us how great Frida's
painting is (rather than trusting in the power of the images themselves), Taymor's dynamic energy and Kahlo's forceful personality give
Frida genuine emotional impact. The superb cast includes Roger Rees, Valeria Golino, Ashley Judd, Geoffrey Rush, Antonio Banderas,
and Edward Norton. --Bret Fetzer - Amazon.com

Charlton Heston
Carol Reed (The Third Man) directed this 1965 portrait of the relationship
between Michelangelo (Charlton Heston) and Pope Julius II (Rex Harrison),
who commissioned the artist to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Based
on a novel by Irving Stone, the script plods along, juggling the dynamics
between the two men along with a somewhat perfunctory love story and distracting
battle sequences. Reed seems more attuned to the nuances and great pains
of the artistic process, as seen in sequences of Michelangelo working.
But the overall focus of the film is unfortunately fuzzy. --Tom Keogh

The
Horse's Mouth - Criterion Collection (1958) DVD
DVD from Home Vision Entertainment
starring Alec Guinness, Kay Walsh
directed by Ronald Neame
Alec Guinness was in the full bloom of his stardom when
he suggested, scripted, and starred in this wonderfully odd 1958 adaptation
of Joyce Cary's novel. As Gulley Jimson, a gravel-voiced, antisocial painter,
whose artistic drive is as single-minded (and as self-absorbed) as a terrier's,
Guinness sketches one of his carefully constructed marvels. The film has
a bumpily episodic structure, but when it works, it really works: Gulley
inhabiting (and mostly destroying) a penthouse apartment when the upper-crusty
owners go on holiday for six weeks, or marshaling an army of apprentices
to create a masterpiece on a giant wall in a condemned building. Departing
from the novel, Guinness concocted the movie's madcap ending, which is
guaranteed to bring a smile. Adding verve is the music, adapted from Prokofiev's
Lieutenant Kijé, which fits Gulley like the paint under his dirty
nails. The artworks, vivid and thick, are by John Bratby. --Robert Horton
