In 1775 when he was Ambassador to France, Ben Franklin purchased this small French schooner. The ship was nearly invisible at night, as she was painted black above the waterline. Franklin named her the Black Prince and sent her to raid British merchant shipping. The Black Prince gained a reputation as a courageous privateer, taking prizes in the English Channel, and even attacking Brtish ships in their home ports. The prizes & booty were sent home to the Colonies to help win the War for Independence. Ben Franklin owned two Privateers, the Black Prince & the Black Princess, and for a year they made a fine mess of British shipping. These corsairs were the predecessors to the famous Baltimore Clippers. This kit features plank on laser-cut bulkhead construction. Hardwood grating, belaying pins, blocks & deadeyes. Cast black metal anchors, and 4 bronzed cannons & carriages and 2 swivel guns. Silk-screened flags and blueprint sized instruction plans of course!
