The
Battle of Britain: The Myth and the Reality
by Richard Overy
Overy's slender, well-written study of the Battle of Britain celebrates
the very real accomplishments of the RAF and, its revisionism aside, acknowledges
that the Battle of Britain was a true turning point in the history of World
War II. Overy holds that one of its most important results was to lead
influential Americans to urge that the United States take Britain's side,
a fact that would soon be realized. More important, though, the Battle
of Britain kept England in the war at a time when many politicians and
citizens sought some accommodation with the Nazi regime. It galvanized
popular opposition to Hitler, replacing uncertainties and disagreements
with "a greater sense of purpose and a more united people." --Gregory

Hurricane
Aces 1939-40 (Osprey Aircraft of the Aces, 18)
by Tony Holmes
Synopsis: The Hawker Hurricane was the RAF's first monoplane fighter,
and it dragged the air force in to a position where it could defend Britain
during 1940. Hurricanes outnumbered Spitfires during the Battle of Britain
by three to one, and actually downed more Luftwaffe aircraft than the famous
Supermarine fighter. Even prior to it's "Finest Hour" over southern England,
Hurricanes had provided the first RAF aces of the war in France during
the Blitzkrieg, and they are described in this volume. In 1941 the type
was heavily used in the Mediterranean and North Africa, before being flung
in at the deep end in the Far East against the Japanese. US Eagle Squadron
pilots also flew the type in the early years of the war, and it saw much
combat with the Fleet Air Arm and the Soviet Air Force.

Reach
for the Sky
by Paul Brickhill
A shiver ran down my spine when I read the first words of a review
at the Amazon site: "I sent my dog-eared copy of Reach for the Sky to a
legless hero ...". I had given my own copy to Triple Pete whilst he was
still in hospital recovering from the most horrific accident - his hang-glider
struck high-tension powerlines and left him a quadruple amputee.
This book is required reading for those interested in aviation, the
Battle of Britain ... and the human condition. It's the story of Douglas
Bader, a young man who lost both legs in an aircraft accident shortly before
the war, who bullied his way into the RAF despite stiff opposition, who
went on to become an ace pilot and a wing commander and who finished the
war in the infamous Stalag 13, a prison for recalcitrant escapees.
