Gunfight at the O.K. Corral
by Thom Ross
Book Description: Artist Thom Ross has long had a fascination with the "good guys" and "bad guys" of the Old West. Through rich paintings and a vivid telling of the famous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, he shares his colorful, dramatic interpretations of the event and of the mythic figures who were there-Doc Holliday, the Earp Brothers, the Clantons and McLaurys. The famous gunfight, which took place on October 26, 1881, in Tombstone, Arizona, was a very real event in which two men were wounded and three men were violently slain. However, as a number of movie versions have shown, the showdown neither resolved grievances, nor was it an end in itself. Instead, the killings went on for months afterward. Thom Ross uses the famous confrontation as the inspiration for his bold images, suggesting that the players in this historic drama have long since transcended the real circumstances of the shootout. Today, they embody the universal struggle to face and overcome the dangers and obstacles that await us all in our lives.

John H. Behan: Sacrificed Sheriff
by Bob Alexander
Book Description John Harris Behan, as author Bob Alexander so capably demonstrates, was a true frontiersman of the early Arizona Territory. Long portrayed as a villain in the Tombstone conflicts, and the nemesis of Wyatt Earp, "Sacrificed Sheriff" presents the story of a 40-year lawman and public servant who was skilled with gun and horse, yet who consistently fought crime and arrested bad guys without killing anyone. Behan also was a Civil War volunteer, twice a Territorial Legislator, and Yuma Prison...

Inventing Wyatt Earp: His Life and Many Legends
by Allen Barra
Sorting through the innumerable legends about Wyatt Earp and his brothers is a monumental task, but Allen Barra, a sports columnist for the Wall Street Journal and a lifelong devotee of western lore, has tried mightily to sort the fact from fiction to determine once and for all if the Earps were heroes or villains. Judging by the cascade of films, books, and TV shows that have portrayed the Earps and their pal "Doc" Holliday, some people simply can't get enough of the legends, and those folks will find Inventing Wyatt Earp fascinating.

The central event of the Earp story is the fabled gunfight near Tombstone's O.K. Corral, a violent eruption in a simmering feud between, believe it or not, frontier Democrats and Republicans. Barra delves deeply into the motivations of all the participants and those who would later tell their stories, and he deserves credit for conducting his prodigious research with skepticism. However, the thoroughness of Barra's approach is a double-edged sword: his relentless examination of Earp's life and the various accounts of it can at times lead the narrative into a blinding sandstorm of minor details. Nonetheless, for those with a strong interest in sorting out the truth about the legends of Tombstone, this book is a valuable source. --Robert McNamara - Amazon.com
