on the people, labor, and culture of coal mining and related industries
in eastern Pennsylvania. The museum displays objects and images of the
everyday life of coal miners and their families, including exhibits of
household furnishings, religious artifacts, and work implements and machinery.
Nearby Scranton Iron Furnaces, four stone blast furnace stacks built between

Beyond
the Boundaries: Life and Landscape at the Lake Superior Copper Mines, 1840-1875
by Larry D. Lankton
Book Description Spanning the years 1840-1875, Beyond the Boundaries
focuses on the settlement of Upper Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, telling
the story of reluctant pioneers who attempted to establish a decent measure
of comfort, control, and security in what was in many ways a hostile environment.
Moving beyond the technological history of the period found in his previous
book Cradle to the Grave: Life, Work, and Death at the Lake Superior Copper
Mines (OUP 1991), Lankton here focuses on the people of this region and
how the copper mining affected their daily lives.
A truly first-rate social history, Beyond the Boundaries will
appeal to historians of the frontier and of Michigan and the Great Lakes
region, as well as historians of technology, labor, and everyday life.

Book Description: Kathleen Rice was an inspiring woman who lived
ahead of her time. Born in St. Marys, Ontario, she graduated as a gold
medallist in Mathematics at the University of Toronto in 1906. After a
conventional beginning teaching school in Ontario and Saskatchewan, Kate
broke free of the mold, searching for new frontiers as a prospector in
Manitoba during the gold rush. She formed a partnership with Dick Woosey
and began a life in the remote areas around Herb Lake, prospecting and
trapping. After Woosey's death, Kate faced her final and most difficult
challenge - living alone in the wildness of the north.

When
the Mines Closed: Stories of Struggles in Hard Times
by Thomas Dublin
Book Description: The anthracite region of northeastern Pennsylvania,
five hundred square miles of rugged hills stretching between Tower City
and Carbondale, harbored coal deposits that once heated virtually all the
homes and businesses in Eastern cities. At its peak during World War I,
the coal industry here employed 170,000 miners, and supported almost 1,000,000
people. Today, with coal workers numbering 1,500, only 5,000 people depend
on the industry for their livelihood. Between these two points in time
lies a story of industrial decline, of working people facing incremental
and cataclysmic changes in their world. When the Mines Closed tells this
story in the words of men and women who experienced these dramatic changes
and in more than eighty photographs of these individuals, their families,
and the larger community.
