Ancient
Persia : From 550 Bc to 650 Ad
by Josef Wiesehofer
Book Description:
Of all the great civilizations of the ancient world, that of Persia
is one of the least understood. Josef Wiesehöfer's comprehensive survey
of the Persian Empire under the Achaeminids, the Parthians, and the Sasanians
focuses on the primary Persian sources-written, archaeological, and numismatic.
He avoids the traditional Western approach, which has tended to rely heavily
on inaccurate Greek and Roman accounts. Part of the freshness of this book
comes from its Near Eastern perspective.

The
Army and the Creation of the Pahlavi State in Iran
by Stephanie Cronin
Card catalog description
In 1921 Riza Khan, a colonel in the Iranian Cossack Brigade, rode on
Tehran and, in a military coup that was to change Iran's destiny, took
power. Appropriating the state-building objectives of Iranian constitutionalism
and nationalism, Riza Khan embarked on the task of constructing a strong,
modern, centralized state at the heart of which lay a new national army.
Ruthless and cunning, he used the emergent military and political institutions
to crush both civilian and military opposition, and in 1926 crowned himself
Shah of Iran. But in the construction of his army Riza Khan relied upon
the material bequeathed to him by the reform efforts of the late nineteenth
century and the constitutional revolution. This unique book - the first
to discuss in detail the way in which the modern Iranian army was created
- puts the rise of Riza Shah into sorely needed historical context and
outlines, in a careful analysis of the way in which Riza ensured the army
over civil institutions such as parliament and the provincial authorities,
the military roots of monarchical dictatorship in Iran.

Blood
and Oil : Inside the Shah's Iran
by Manucher Farmanfarmaian, Roxane Farmanfarmaian
Anyone who views Iran merely as a nation of Muslim fanatics should
read this riveting exposition of its tortuous 20th-century history. Born
in 1917 into an aristocratic Iranian family, Manucher Farmanfarmaian served
his country in the treacherous world of petroleum production and distribution--the
source, he believes, of the disastrous Western meddling that indirectly
led to the 1979 fundamentalist revolution. Writing with his journalist
daughter, Farmanfarmaian details Iran's labyrinthine internal politics
and international relations with thoroughness enlivened by muscular prose,
a sharp eye for character, and lots of good anecdotes. Amazon.com

Daughter
of Persia : A Woman's Journey from Her Father's Harem Through the Islamic
Revolution
by Sattareh Farman Farmaian, et al
Synopsis Sattareh Farman Farmaian, the daughter of a once-powerful
and wealthy Iranian prince, was raised and educated in the 1920s and 1930s
in a Persian harem compound, along with numerous mothers and more than
30 brothers and sisters. As a young woman, she broke with Muslim tradition
and travelled to America, where she became the first Persian to study at
the University of Southern California. Her new life in the West fired a
vision to lift her own people out of backwardness and poverty, and she
returned to Iran to found the Tehran School of Social Work. For more than
20 years, Sattareh and her students waged a war against poverty, disease
and overcrowding, and then, soon after the collapse of the Shah's regime,
she was forced to flee the country in fear of her life. In this account
of her experiences, she provides an insider's view of Iran's journey through
the 20th century and of the events which led up to, and followed, the Islamic
revolution.

The
History of Iran (The Greenwood Histories of the Modern Nations)
by Elton L. Daniel (Author)
Book Description: With almost three thousand years of history,
Iran is home to one of the world's richest and most complex cultures. Yet
to the average American the name Iran probably conjures up an image of
a remote and upstart country inhabited by a people whose religious fanaticism
is matched only by the intensity of their disdain for the United States
and its values, who speak an obscure tongue called Farsi, and whose identity
is not clearly distinguished from that of their Arab neighbors. This work
offers an objective and engagingly written portrait of the Iranian people
and their complex history from the perspective of one of the world's foremost
experts on the country. It is ideal for student use and for the interested
reader.

Making of Iran's Islamic Revolution: From Monarchy to Islamic Republic
by Mohsen M. Milani
Book Description In this fully revised and expanded second edition,
Dr. Milani offers new insights into the causes and profound consequences
of Iran's Islamic Revolution. Drawing on dozens of personal interviews
with the officials of the Islamic Republic and on recently released documents,
he presents a provocative analysis of the dynamics and characteristics
of factional politics in Islamic Iran. Among the new issues covered are
the events leading up to the Teheran hostage crisis, Ayatollah Khomeini's
life and writings, President Rafsanjani's activities against the Shah,
Rafsanjani's recent reforms, Iran's involvement in the Kuwaiti crisis,
and the domestic and foreign policy challenges facing Iran in the post-Cold
War era.

The
Turban for the Crown: The Islamic Revolution in Iran
by Said Amir Arjomand
Book Description The Iranian revolution still baffles most Western
observers. Few considered the rise of theocracy in a modernized state possible,
and fewer thought it might result from a popular revolution. Said Amir
Arjomand's The Turban for the Crown provides a thoughtful, painstakingly
researched, and intelligible account of the turmoil in Iran which reveals
the importance of this singular event for our understanding of revolutions.
Providing crucial historical background, Arjomand examines both the
structure of authority in Shi'ism (one of the two main branches of Islam)
and the impact of the modern state on Iranian society, two factors essential
to the comprehension of the revolution of 1979. He then describes the emergence
of Khomeini; the infusion of petrodollars into the economy; the blatant
political corruption; and Khomeini's disposal of Bakhtiar, Bani-Sadr, and
Bazargan, consolidation of religious rule, and establishment of a constitution
based on a new interpretation of Islamic principles.

Winds
of Change: The Future of Democracy in Iran
by Reza Pahlavi
Book Description After more than two decades under the rule
of a clerical dictatorship, Iran is mired in backwardness, poverty, corruption,
rigidity, radicalism, and incivility. Yet, there is hope for the future.
In Winds of Change, Reza Pahlavi, the son of the late Shah of
Iran, outlines his vision for a democratic Iran. Forced to live in exile
since the establishment of the clerical regime in 1979, he has been a leading
advocate of freedom, democracy, and human rights for Iranians. Pahlavi's
prescription for the salvation of his homeland is simple: popular sovereignty
and self-determination. Iran is a politically diverse society, with leftists
and rightists, monarchists and republicans, conservatives, centrists, and
liberals. Yet all can agree on the basic agenda he puts forward for his
countrymen in Winds of Change.

works and the importance of his place among classical authors.
