Scooterama
: Cafe Chic and Urban Cool
by Alastair Walker, Steve Berry
After
enjoying iconic status among Hollywood celebrities from John Wayne to Jayne
Mansfield in the 1950s, and the trendy "mods" of the 1960s, scooters suffered
through a period of relative obsurity in the 1970s and 1980s. Today, however,
forward-thinking manufacturers such as Piaggio, Velocifero, Peugeot, Italjet,
and Honda are launching scooters that are gaining favor among glitterati,
daily commuters, and the hip cognoscenti worldwide. This all-color history
of the motorscooter examines its sophisticated popularity beginning in
the 1950s and ending with its current resurgence. Beautifully produced,
the book is rife with classic photography of scooters old and new, with
a special emphasis on notable design elements.

Vespa
: An Illustrated History
by Eric Brockway
When it was first introduced in 1949, the Vespa scooter was an entirely
new type of vehicle, the result of a flash of inspiration followed by innovative
engineering and astute marketing. It captured the imagination of a generation
and found a place in the hearts of all who rode it. The author tells the
story of this remarkable two-wheeler, from its Italian origins through
40 years of development, with anecdotes about the machines and the colourful
characters involved with them.

The Cult of Vespa
by
Umberto Eco, Omar Calabrese, Lina Wertmuller, Francois Burkhardt
Here is the entertaining history of the Vespa on its 50th anniversary.
Not many products achieve a fifty year life span, and the 50 years of Vespa
are even more striking if one considers the period in which it came to
existence. Many post-war inventions were forgotten when income rose and
living standards improved, but Vespa developed from a utility vehicle into
an international success, a 'cult-object', which has given rise to the
creation of associations and collector's guilds world-wide. Text by Umberto
Eco, Omar Calabrese, Lina Wertmuller, Francois Burkhardt, Maurizio Bertini,
and many other celebrities.

Rockers! Kings of the Road
by Johnny Stuart
Listed under Classic Motorcycles
Quadrophenia (1979) VHS
Starring: Phil Daniels, et al.
Franc Roddam's terrifically energetic movie, set to music from the
Who's Quadrophenia, is--at the very least, the best film ever based on
a rock album (and, yes, that includes, Tommy, Pink Floyd: The Wall, and
Jesus Christ Superstar). Actually, this tale of the battle between two
early '60s youth subcultures--Mods and Rockers--in the seaside teenage
wasteland of Brighton, England, isn't so much a cinematic "version" of
the Who's 1979 double-record rock opera as it is a story based on the sequence
of songs on the album. Quadrophenia is about that crucial time in teenhood
when the lion's share of your sense of identity is tied up in the music
you listen to, the clothes you wear, and the groups you hang out with.
Jimmy (Phil Daniels) identifies himself with the sharp-dressing, scooter-riding
Mods, who listen to American soul and British pop-rock (The Who themselves
were once rather Mod). The Rockers, on the other hand, are leather-jacketed,
black-booted, motorcycle-riding tough guys who listen primarily to classic
American rock & roll. The film captures this minor pop-culture revolution
perfectly. Look for Sting as a club-hopping slickster, who's shameful secret
is that he's a hotel bellboy by day. --Jim Emerson - Amazon.com
