At the Grave of the Unknown Fisherman
At the Grave of the Unknown Fisherman
by John Gierach
Book Description: At the Grave of the Unknown Fisherman is a journey through the year with America's finest fishing writer, John Gierach. The journey begins with an early spring expedition to Wyoming, where the dirt roads are still covered with a thin sheen of ice that quickly turns to mud underfoot. The conditions are so uninviting that everyone involved agrees they must be crazy to be fishing so early in the season. But, as Gierach observes, "nothing makes a fisherman happier than to have just proved that he must be crazy." Gierach's fishing year ends with a winter fly-fishing trip in the Colorado Rockies, a time of year when, Gierach says, "it's still possible to have what seems like a whole river all to yourself." Of course, the chances of catching any fish are small, a situation about which Gierach comments, "Anyone would go fishing thinking he'll catch something. It's when you go figuring you probably won't that you know you've crossed some kind of line."

In between, Gierach entertains us as always, mixing the one-liners about the fishing life with deeper insights into friendship, how we spend our time, and why nature still matters to us.

Emergers
Emergers
by Doug Swisher, Carl Richards
Back Cover Copy
The moments when trout-stream insects leave their immature stage at the bottom of a river and rise to the surface to hatch are the most important in their life cycles. Now they are most vulnerable to trout; now they are at the ideal stage for fly fishers to imitate. Yet this is one of the least understood and least written about phenomena. Emergers is a dramatic and pathbreaking book. Swisher and Richards have explored this magical moment of emergence for years. From extensive stream studies and the use of indoor aquariums, they have examined the process by which mayflies, stoneflies, caddisflies, midges, dragonflies, damselflies, and other aquatic insects emerge from their immature state to that of winged adults; and they have also explored the related phenomenon known as "invertebrate drift." Especially valuable are the many fascinating and highly effective new Swisher-Richards fly patterns and fishing techniques presented in Emergers - all of which are bound to be welcomed by fly fishers the world over. Fly Fishing for Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon
Fly Fishing for Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon
by Lefty Kreh
Book Description: Among the most prized fly-rod gamefish in salt water, bonefish, permit, and tarpon are also the most challenging species to take on fly tackle. Bonefish, called "gray ghosts of the flats," feed in skinny water, are very difficult to see, and in Lefty's words "are more nervous than a cat in a dog pound." And tarpon, called "silver kings," are famed as great leapers, grow to enormous size, and require special techniques to hook and land successfully. In this gorgeous, full-color book, world-renowned fly angler Lefty Kreh covers everything you need to know to capture all three species on the long rod, including tackle selection; leaders, knots and tippets; finding fish; wading techniques; how to fish from a boat; and techniques for striking, landing, and releasing your catch.

Lefty Kreh is the most respected and best known fly-casting instructor and fly-fishing author in the world. For more than fifty years, he has traveled the world with fly rod in hand.

Stripers on the Fly
Stripers on the Fly
by Lou Tabory
Only the name Lou Tabory stands with Lefty Kreh's when it comes to imparting wisdom and inspiring trust in the complex and still relatively young arena of angling saltwater with flies. Tabory certainly understands the daunting challenge: "The first look at big water will unnerve most who have never fished the ocean." Not to worry. His patience, clarity, and breadth in Stripers on the Fly should have even unsettled novices eager to throw a line.

By devoting an entire volume to a single species, Tabory, one of saltwater fly-fishing's pioneers, gives himself the luxury of covering the small details that more general efforts are forced to overlook. In fly-fishing, it's not the devil so much that resides in the details as the fish themselves. Over the course of this invaluable instructional, Tabory wades from the basics to the advanced on striper habits and likely locations; equipment; understanding tides, weather, and the seasons; learning how to read and approach different kinds of water; how to cast in various conditions; what flies to use; and the nuances of hooking, fighting, and landing. Illustrations abound, none better than the insert of color photos of Tabory's favorite striper flies. "No other saltwater species offers the average fly angler such fishing opportunities so close to highly populated areas," Tabory assures. With Tabory as guide, anglers can turn these opportunities into successes. --Jeff Silverman
