The
African Dream: The diaries of the Revolutionary War in the Congo
by Ernesto Che Guevara, Translated by Patrick Camiller
Book Description Ernesto "Che" Guevara was one of the greatest exemplars
of the revolutionary 1960s, a man whose heroic adventures were essential
to the success of the Cuban Revolution and whose legend fired the imaginations
of a whole generation. In 1965, amid worldwide conjecture, Guevara left
Cuba, where he was a minister in Fidel Castro's postrevolutionary government,
and traveled incognito to the heart of Africa. People's hero Patrice Lumumba
had recently been assassinated, and Guevara was to put his theories of
guerrilla warfare to use helping the oppressed people of the Congo throw
off the yoke of colonial imperialism. The first task was to assist the
young Laurent Kabila in his struggle against Mobutu and Tshombe, the two
key figures in the newly independent nation. For the first time, The African
Dream collects Guevara's unabridged journals of the expedition. They are
the record of the bitter failure of a political and ideological dream,
and a telling complement to the subsequent rise of Kabila and his recent
demise. Most of all, the diaries afford the reader a very personal insight
into the thoughts and emotions of Che Guevara, the twentieth century's
great revolutionary martyr.

Diaries : A Journey Around South America
by Ernesto Che Guevara, Ann Wright (Translator)
Full of high drama and comedy, The Motorcycle Diaries is the
story of a remarkable road journey in the words of a 23-year-old medical
student known as "Che". There are fights, parties, and serious drinking.
There are also moving examples of Guevara's idealism and solidarity with
the oppressed, in this vivid record of what for others would have been
the adventure of a lifetime. No biographical study or understanding of
Che Guevara is complete without the reading of his diaries recording his
thoughts as he journeyed around South America. Midwest Book Review

Ernesto
Che Guevara, The Bolivian Diary (1996) - English subtitles VHS
Following the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro's trusted comrade Ernesto
Che Guevara found himself becoming a bureaucrat. Seeking a return to action,
Che eventually traveled in secret to Bolivia in 1966, hoping to foment
a revolution on the South American mainland that would spread throughout
all of Latin America. This documentary, which relies greatly on a journal
Che kept during his time in Bolivia, as well as interviews with contemporaries
who fought in the hills with him, provides an insightful look at his thoughts
during the last year of his life. Che's apparent intent in Bolivia was,
of course, to copy the success of the Cuban Revolution, but the words of
his journal, as read in the documentary, betray his increasing hopelessness.
His band of guerrillas was tiny and hungry, often more concerned with killing
birds for food than with any principles of global revolution. According
to those who appear on camera to speak of Guevara's final days, it seems
the peasants were terrified of getting involved. Tracking Guevara's movements
through the Bolivian mountains, the documentary proceeds at a leisurely
pace, but it also provides a great deal of information about Guevara's
final days, leading up to his execution by Bolivian troops acting, some
say, under the direction of the CIA. --Robert J. McNamara - Amazon.com
