The Days of the Warlords
by Paul A. Blum
Book Description: This book deals comprehensively with the struggles of two Byzantine warlords, Bardas Sclerus and Bardas Phocas, against the legitimate Byzantine emperor Basil II. The author emphasizes that the civil wars that resulted form the context for several major world events. In addition to the conversion of Russia in 988, this lucid book describes the way that the civil wars also blunted a hitherto successful Byzantine advance against the Muslim world. Contents: The Days of the Warlords; A Call to Arms; Phocas in the East; Basil Comes of Age; The Warlords Unite; Endnotes for Chapter I; Endnotes for Chapter II; Endnotes for Chapter IV; Endnotes for Chapter V; Principal Biography.

Byzantium and the Early Islamic Conquests
by Walter E. Kaegi (Author)
Book Description: This is a study of how and why the Byzantine empire lost many of its most valuable provinces to Islamic conquerors in the seventh century, provinces that included Syria, Palestine, Mesopotamia and Armenia. It investigates conditions on the eve of those conquests, mistakes in Byzantine policy toward the Muslims, the course of the military campaigns, and the problem of local official and civilian collaboration with the Muslims. It also seeks to explain how after some terrible losses the Byzantine government achieved some intellectual rationalization of its disasters and began the complex process of transforming and adapting its fiscal and military institutions and political controls in order to prevent further disintegration.
