Then & Now
by Allen Dutton
Book Description When paired with the historic images of 19th
and 20th century photographers, Arizona photographer Allen Dutton's modern-day
images reveal the changes that have shaped the state's landscape during
the past 100-plus years. To illustrate these sometimes drastic, sometimes
subtle differences, Allen searched the state to locate the precise spots
from which to rephotograph the scenes captured by his predecessors- endeavoring
to achieve the same angles, perspectives, and lighting as in the early
photographs. The result reveals the consequences of humankind's efforts
to tame the stark deserts and rugged mountains of the American West as
well as Mother Nature's ability to rebuild and reclaim her own.

Drenched
in Blood, Rigid in Death: The True Story of the Wickenburg Massacre
by R. Michael Wilson
Book Description Early on the morning of November 5, 1871, seven passengers
continued on their journey toward Ehrenberg, Arizona Territory. One hour
west of Wickenburg their stagecoach was attacked. The driver and five men
were murdered. A seventh man and the only female passenger escaped, though
severely wounded. Sixteen hours later a rescue party recovered the bodies
of five victims 'drenched in blood, rigid in death'. A pursuit posse followed
closely behind and the following day the Army's investigation began. The
result of that inquiry presaged a campaign that would punish the guilty
and alter the fate of nearly every Indian in America's southwest.

Enigma
at Tumacacori Arizona
by Gary D. Oliver
Book Description Never before documented facts surrounding the
old Tumacacori Mission in the hills west of the Tumacacori Mission National
Historical Monument. The book documents very old drill holes in rocks,
that when rods are inserted, point to important but unknown locations,
details the fabled Tumacacori treasure located at 8 local mines, early
native american mining, possible locations for the 7 Cities of Cibola,
rock ruins, and more. Although Coronado never found the fabled 7 Cities
of Cibola in 1539, the Coronado National Forest surrounds this site and
is named to honor his efforts. In 1919, Frank Pinkley was the US Government
official responsible for preserving this site. Frank told the local newspaper
that the original mission is located near a lost or abandoned Aztec city
spread out over a long red mesa, where there were markings pointing to
hidden Aztec treasure. I believe the drill holes are the markings Frank
was talking about.

Fort
Huachuca: The Story of a Frontier Post
by Cornelius C. Smith Jr.
Book Description This is a history of the famous old post erected
deep within Apache country in Arizona where anyone stepping into the territory
met with vicious, horrendous attack. The post served courageously to protect
an ever-increasing influx of settlers into a wild and fearsome territory.
With the Spanish reach for empire, colonization, and usurpation of Indian
lands, the Apaches retaliated in the only way they knew how, by vicious
and sustained attack upon anyone violating Apache territory. Emigrants,
lone travelers, overland-mail riders and itinerant merchants were gunned
down, slaughtered, mutilated and roasted alive.
If the white man wanted the gold and silver hiding in the hills the
he would have to win access to the precious metals the hard way. This is
the reason of Fort Huachuca's existence. One of the most savage contests
of arms between dedicated and able frontier army soldiers and implacable
Indian braves. This confrontation culminated in the inevitable reduction
of the primitive by the technologically advanced. This was not brought
on so much by the introduction of equipment and machines, however, as by
persistence and the sheer weight of numbers.
Fort Huachuca saw it all. It began in a primitive setting from cavalry
charge and marathon infantrymen to being equipped with the most modern
equipment of real bugles and crackling loud-speakers. That shows how long
the ugly battle continued.

Galeyville,
Arizona Territory 1880: Its History and Historic Archaeology
by Brooks White
Book Description Galeyville has been reputed as a town rife
with outlaws, gamblers and miners who lived life to the edge. That reputation
and the legends around it have been meticulously researched, analyzed and
interpreted by Brooks White in "Galeyville, Arizona Territory 1880—Its
History and Historic Archaeology." Using historic records and his own archaeological
techniques, White has examined every aspect of this town's existence, from
the area's geology and climatology before the creation of Galeyville to
the detection of notorious outlaw Curly Bill Brocious's signature on a
cave wall just outside the town.

by Barbara Kingsolver
Book Description Novelist Barbara Kingsolver began her writing
career with Holding the Line. It is the story of how women's lives were
transformed by an eighteen-month strike against the Phelps-Dodge Copper
Corporation. Set in the small mining towns of Arizona, the story is partly
oral history and partly social criticism, exploring the process of empowerment
which occurs when people work together as a community.

Trader: The Life and Times of J. L. Hubbell
by Martha Blue
Book Description From the late 1870's until 1930, Juan Lorenzo
Hubbell traded at Ganado, Arizona, in Navajo country. While Euro-Americans
viewed him as the dean of Indian traders in the Southwest, Navajo sentiment
varied.
J.L. Hubbell's life story tells the larger tale of the settlement of
the West, the reservation trader, and the Indian economy. Marths Blue's
ethnobiography weaves the conflicts and complexities of the Southwest into
Hubbell's life: the Navajos' repatriation and economic recovery, the sera
of the reservation trader in frontier history, the tourist explosion wrought
by the Santa Fe Railway and the Fred Harvey Company. It also explores Arizona's
quest for statehood, water development in its desert plateau country, the
transition of the Navajo blanket to rug, and the image-makers' (artists,
writers and photographers) portrayals of the Southwest.
Drawing on historical documents, oral histories, and archival materials,
Blue presents a fascinating tapestry of character and place richly illustrated
by over 100 photographs and maps. Her portrait of Juan Lorenzo Hubbell
positions him squarely in the gallery of the West's prominent men.

Investigations
at Sunset Mesa Ruin: Archaeology at the Confluence of the Santa Cruz and
Rillito Rivers, Tucson, Arizona
by Richard Ciolek-Torrello
In 1989, Statistical Research, Inc. (SRI), began a decade-long research
project at the site, carried out over three phases. Sponsored by the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District, research focused on two
distinct components. The bulk of the study concerned a Rincon phase settlement
dating between A.D. 1000 and 1100. Also investigated was a three-room adobe
house constructed around 1893 by Basillio Cuevas, a Mexican immigrant.
Excavation of the Cuevas adobe and associated refuse deposits and archival
research provide rare insights into the lives of such Mexican homesteaders.
