As of June 2007, this book has become out of date. Many of the shikumen houses that I went to visit have been torn down in Shanghai in an effort to modernize the city by 2010 for the World Expo. My friend got the LP Shanghai book while I got this one. This proved to be very helpful and I love the Chinese street translations at the back of the book, which came in handy when a cab driver couldn't understand what we were saying. I hope they release an updated version as I will definitely visit... more info

This book has a few more useful pieces of information that Lonely Planet may not have but I found the LP format to be better laid out. This book does better than LP in the respect of including the Chinese characters on the city maps and also for destinations, hotels, addresses, etc.
