Trying to upgrade my Amateur license while working full time is tough, I needed a no-nonsense book. The ARRL people really did this one right to the point, examples of test questions, all written in laymans easy to read terms. Highly recommend this book.

Customer Review:

A great intro to the overall topic. Coupled with the ARRL's "Ham Radio License Manual: All You Need to Become an Amateur Radio Operator," they're enough to make sure you successfully pass your written test. Both books are written by Ward Silver, and there's a fair amount of duplication between... more info

from Amer Radio Relay League
Price: $40.41

Customer Review:
ARRL publishes a handful of titles that occupy the pinnacle in ham radio publishing, including their license manuals, Operating Manual, Handbook, and, of course, the Antenna book. There is nothing that really compares to ARRL's antenna book in terms of either raw coverage or quality. While there are... more info

4.[no image]The Arrl Operating Manual
from Amer Radio Relay League

Customer Review:
Except for a listing of the Morse Code character set there is no coverage of operating CW. The one communications mode that has been so linked to Amateur Radio is CW and yet the mode goes without so much as an honorable mention. A good book for introduction to other modes buy incomplete without CW.

6.[no image]Arrl's Hf Digital Handbook
from American Radio Relay League (ARRL)

Customer Review:
Although some have complained that this book has little to offer grizzled veterans of digital operations on the HF bands, it is an excellent primer on:
1.) what's available,
2.) what each method can and can't do, and
3.) the requirements for operating each.
This is a "handbook"... more info

Customer Review:
If you use this book, and take the practice tests online until your passing them fairly consistently, you will have a very high probability of passing your test.
Best way to study is to work with the book about 1/2 hour a day, no more.

9.How Radio Signals WorkHow Radio Signals Work
from McGraw-Hill/TAB Electronics

Customer Review:
I'm just beginning to get into Amateur Radio (ie: Ham radio) to move my career more toward RF technology. This book really lays out the info very gently, doesn't try to impress you with huge words or complex theorems. For anyone trying to gain insight into RF, this is a GREAT starting point. But, if... more info

10.Ham Radio: SimplifiedHam Radio: Simplified
from GOCEAN, Global Oceanic Communication, Education & Assistance Network
Price: $8.95

Customer Review:
Ham radio overview should have been the title. This book is all bones and no meat and would be a waste of money to even a beginning ham.
I would highly recommend "Ham Radio for Dummies", which in my opinion, is the best book out ther for beginners and as a reference.
