1.Number the StarsNumber the Stars
from HARPER COLL CHILDREN

Customer Review:
Every few years I read this book over and love it every time. It is a great book to introduce kids to the plight of the Jews and non-Jews of German-occupied countries during WWII. My 10 year old read it and loved it too and it brought up a lot of questions. Highly recommended.

2.Angela s Ashes: A MemoirAngela's Ashes: A Memoir
from Topeka Bindery
Price: $25.05

Customer Review:
The basic problem with it is that while McCourt's life of poverty in Ireland is interesting and there are a couple of dozen well written passages and anecdotes, the work is atrociously edited. All the more galling for the lack of good editing is that this was McCourt's first book- he needed the... more info

I love this book and find it very educational. The author did a great job with the writing and research and the illustrator did a wonderful job with making the appearance attractive.

4.[no image]The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Volume II: 395 A.D. -- 1185 A.D.
from Modern Library

Customer Review:
The title of this piece is more of a plea than a statement, but then again, I don't think Ed can hear me regardless.
For non-academics which I surely am, this tome is unreadable. While I wasn't exactly contemplating an easy read, I never expected a rapture equaling the best/worst Shakespeare... more info

5.The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain (Caldecott Honor Book)The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain (Caldecott Honor Book)
from Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR)
Price: $12.24

Customer Review:
I remember when I was in High School PBS did a series of presentations from inside Russia. Suddenly there were humans on the other side of the curtain of the Cold War. I remember reading an art book shortly after that about artists who hid out in basements and attics. "The Wall" is a many years... more info

6.I Have Lived a Thousand Years: Growing Up in the HolocaustI Have Lived a Thousand Years: Growing Up in the Holocaust
from Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing

Customer Review:
This was my 8th grade son's summer reading. He could not stop reading it and it caused him to initiate a lot of conversation with us about the holocaust. Since it was from the perspective of a girl his own age, he really identified with it.

7.[no image]This is Paris
from MacMillan

Customer Review:
Written and drawn in 1959 this children's book taught me a thing or two about a city I thought I already knew a lot about. The pictures and scenes are wonderful in bright colors and include most of the major sites in Paris from "le metro" to Montmartre and the Champs Elysees.
There have been a... more info

8.Survivors: True Stories of Children in the HolocaustSurvivors: True Stories of Children in the Holocaust
from Scholastic Paperbacks
Price: $4.99

Customer Review:
It is a good book, the stories are cruel, but not so detailed. Kids need to know about what happened, and this is a good way, but definitely not for kids under sixth grade.

9.Minimus Pupil s Book: Starting out in Latin (Minimus)Minimus Pupil's Book: Starting out in Latin (Minimus)
from Cambridge University Press
Price: $15.64

Customer Review:
This fun book couldn't be a more outstanding tool for teaching your kids Latin. It starts with a comic-strip style story often narrated by the mouse Minimus. The comic uses a lot of repetition to help the kids retain words. Then the chapter continues with vocabulary and grammer which ties in closely... more info
