| | 1. | | The Enchantress of Florence: A Novel from Random House Price: $17.16
Customer Review:
This is a good novel, but it could have been a great one. We don't learn enough about Akbar's ideas, or Machiavelli's. Or about Argalia's fighting techniques--weapons, strategies--that made him so successful. There should be a BALANCE between magic realism and history.

| | 2. | | Midnight's Children: A Novel from Random House Trade Paperbacks Price: $10.17
Customer Review:
Oh, my goodness. What do I say about this? It's such a rich, excellently written story with lots of interesting action and characters. Bonus: Rushdie has a wicked wicked WICKED sense of humor. And, did I say that the writing is to die for? Envy the size of an elephant inhabited my body as I was... more info

| | 3. | | The Satanic Verses: A Novel from Random House Trade Paperbacks Price: $12.80
Customer Review:
My wife commented drily as she saw me reading this day after day that it was probably one of the least read bestsellers. Two decades after its controversial release, does this novel merit the considerable attention it demands from any reader taking on over five-hundred pages of often densely... more info

| | 5. | | Shalimar the Clown: A Novel from Random House Trade Paperbacks Price: $10.17
Customer Review:
Max Ophuls is killed on his daughter's doorstep right after her birthday. His daughter, named India for where she was born, seems to have premonitions of this murder and is worried for her father. The story that then unfolds is an historical telling of intertwined lives that lead up to the... more info

| | 6. | | Shame: A Novel from Random House Trade Paperbacks Price: $10.20
Customer Review:
This is more of a long political essay. But, since it is Rushdie, and, since it is fiction (almost), it has his normal touch of the magical and the exaggerated. I haven't disliked this many characters in one book since Richardson's "Clarissa"! I am very glad I never had the opportunity to meet... more info

| | 7. | | The Moor's Last Sigh from Vintage Price: $10.17
Customer Review:
I love Rushdie, though have to admit that some of his stuff has been hard to read. This book, though, is not. A mix of fantasy and Indian life. Very funny. Rushdie is incredible. Not as enjoyable, for me, as Midnight's Children.

| | 8. | | The Ground Beneath Her Feet: A Novel from Picador Price: $10.88
Customer Review:
A reimagining of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth set in the modern world of rock & roll. There are many cultural references, but often twisted in interesting ways. Famous people appear, but in different roles than readers expect. I found this the most fun aspect of the book--wondering how many of... more info
