| | 1. | | The Mistress's Daughter from Penguin (Non-Classics) Price: $11.20
Customer Review:
Perhaps if I was adopted or into tracing my family's ancestry, I would have enjoyed this book more. For me, reading this book was like watching someone else's family videos. I could understand how the process was deeply affecting for her, but the story didn't connect with me emotionally.

| | 2. | | Safety of Objects from Harper Perennial Price: $10.36
Customer Review:
American cinema and literature have glimpsed close at lives in the suburbs with mixed results - some good ("Little Children", both movie and novel; Philip Roth's "American Pastoral", Raymond Carver's and John Cheever's stories, among others) and some not so ("American Beauty"). What most of the... more info

| | 3. | | The End Of Alice from Scribner Price: $11.20
Customer Review:
I dont even know where to begin, all I can say is this book is utterly moving and amazing. The End of Alice is not for the faint of heart might I add; it is incredibly disturbing, which I find makes it all the more readable. It is a story that would shock readers of every aspect and leave them... more info

| | 5. | | Music for Torching from Harper Perennial Price: $10.17
Customer Review:
Graphic for the sake of being graphic, this novel never really got off the ground with me after it lost me with an illogical premise for the whole plot. Though I must say, my MFA class was split as to whether they thought the novel succeeded or not. Quickly: family is falling apart; family burns... more info

| | 8. | | Jack from Vintage Price: $11.16
Customer Review:
I am a big fan of Homes and this first book by her does not disappoint. Jack is a 15 year old guy, pretty average, whose father suddenly announces he is gay. The story focuses around the few months following the announcement and how Jack deals with it. The tone is just right and Homes tackles the... more info

 A. M. Homes, Appendix A: An Elaboration on the Novel The End of Alice (Artspace, 1996)What an odd little book this is. The End of Alice is Homes' magnum opus, a tale of Hannibal Lecter as written by Franz Kafka, Jack the Ripper addressed by John Dryden. Appendix A consists of a confession, a... more info
