| | 2. | | Slouching Towards Bethlehem: Essays from Farrar, Straus and Giroux Price: $11.20
Customer Review:
I study English in Denmark and we were told to read Play It As It Lays and that just made me hungry for more books from Didion and I was not disapointed. Her writing style is unique and the book is a classic a must-read when it comes to a description of contemporary American life.

Customer Review:
 4.5 stars
I read this when it first came out; it opened my 13-year old eyes to many things. One that has stayed with me is that Didion isn't constantly writing as a woman. She writes as a person and a thinker. She has a distinctly female viewpoint, but doesn't hit the reader over the head with... more info

| | 4. | | Play It As It Lays: A Novel from Farrar, Straus and Giroux Price: $10.40
Customer Review:
I bought this novel since it was listed on Time Magazine's list of the Best 100 Novels written in English since 1923. I have no idea why Time Magazine selected it for that esteemed honor. It was mercifully short (easily finished in a couple of hours, if that), but otherwise provided modest rewards... more info

| | 6. | | Where I Was From from Vintage Price: $11.16
Customer Review:
"A good deal about California does not, on its own preferred terms, add up." This sentence, which opens Didion's third chapter in Where I Was From, is characteristic of the sort of pummeling understatement and reserve that characterizes all of Didion's work - humble, free of ostentation, profound in... more info

| | 7. | | Democracy from Vintage Price: $11.16
Customer Review:
Joan Didion's "Democracy" is worth reading for the style alone. There's nothing to match Didion at the top of her form, as in "A Book of Common Prayer" or "Salvador", and "Democracy" is as good as anything she's ever written: austere, pitiless, unblinking, tinged with irony dry as the finest gin.... more info

| | 8. | | A Book of Common Prayer from Vintage Price: $11.16
Customer Review:
I may be too much of a lover of Didion's non-fiction works to take her fiction seriously. This being the third novel following detached and deluded female protagonists (after Run River and Play It As It Lays) into the extremes of their antipathy, it seems clear that, simply, her stories are too much... more info

| | 9. | | The Year of Magical Thinking: The Play from Vintage Price: $9.60
Customer Review:
The Year of Magical Thinking possesses hauntingly concise prose. It is a one-woman show that reads like having a conversation with Didion. The telling is intimate enough to make it feel as if it is an older and wiser sister telling you what you may likely confront in your lifetime. It is detailed... more info

| | 10. | | The Last Thing He Wanted from Vintage Price: $10.40
Customer Review:
I have read several of Didion's non-fiction essay collections and this was the second of the writer's novels for me, after "Play It As It Lays." Reading "The Last Thing" made me feel stupid, and thus I was relieved to see that it averaged only three stars and that I was not the only one who found... more info
