1.DeliveranceDeliverance
from Delta
Price: $10.20

Customer Review:
No need to repeat a plot summary of Dickey's modern classic. The story is well-known due to the popular 1972 film adaptation. What truly makes this book a powerful and shattering read is Dickey's command of the language - a poetic narrative concerning four naive city dwellers confronted with the... more info

2.The Call of the Wild, White Fang, and Other Stories (Twentieth-Century Classics)The Call of the Wild, White Fang, and Other Stories (Twentieth-Century Classics)
from Penguin Classics
Price: $7.95

Customer Review:
One may not like Jack London as a person because of his strong socialist, and social darwinist, beliefs. But one can't deny his brilliance when it comes to his dog/wolf stories. "Call of the Wild", "White Fang", "Batard", and others are simply stunning. The brutalities of the wild, the slow... more info

from Penguin Classics

Customer Review:
Long before TV, the written word was the wellstone of many political movements. This is as true in America as it is in Europe, and many modern American books are testament to this. Upton Sinclair's Jungle started the food safety movement, Nader's Unsafe at any Speed brought public and Congress's... more info

4.[no image]Through the Wheat (Lost American Fiction)
from Southern Illinois University

Customer Review:
Started out slow, Boyd seemed caught up in using as many adjectives as a sentence could hold. Once I got past that and was able to focus on his story it flowed easily. His accurate depiction of what it was like for the average Marine was outstanding. A very good read of USMC WWI history.

5.To the White Sea (Delta World War II Library)To the White Sea (Delta World War II Library)
from Delta
Price: $10.40

Customer Review:
I'd added this book to my Wishlist years ago, based on a list of great war novels I saw in a magazine. Based on the book's appearance on that list, I was greatly surprised by the content of this book; it was less a war novel than it was a story of a man in a crisis.
As has already been said, it... more info

6.The Complete Short Stories Of Thomas WolfeThe Complete Short Stories Of Thomas Wolfe
from Scribner
Price: $27.50

Customer Review:
I've treasured this work of Mr. Wolfe's since purchasing it in the first edition in 1988. I can think of few authors who can transport their readership into relms of utter beauty and transcedence. Experiencing them is a gift to behold.
A MUST start for those who have not read anything by Wolfe.... more info

Customer Review:
The Red Badge of Courage, by Stephen Crane
Stephen Crane was a journalist and covered wars in Mexico, Cuba, and Greece. His life was cut short by tuberculosis, the major killer from the mid 19th to the mid 20th centuries (caused by poverty and poor diets). This is his most famous novel. It... more info

from Signet Classics

Customer Review:
This is the first novel that I ever remember reading and thank the lord for Mark Twain and what he did for me. I was amazed, as a young boy of eight, that a book could bring me so much pleasure. I loved the adventure and romance of Twain's world and thirty years later remember the adventures he took... more info
