Customer Review:
Other reviewers have hit the nail on the head with their reviews, so I will just add that this is a beautifully written novel that I found hard to put down. 2 weeks after finishing it, I find myself still thinking about this thriller.....It is a great thought-provoking read . Highly recommended !!

Customer Review:
I realize that this is an Amazon Editors pick for 2003, but I'm not sure exactly what they saw in this novel. I found it to be tedious, dry and uninspiring. The author's writing style is confusing and overtly manipulative, so I couldn't buy into the story that she was trying to sell me. By the end I... more info

| | 4. | | The Last Magician: A Novel from W. W. Norton & Company Price: $11.86
Customer Review:
I bought this book as a mass market paperback - I am not even sure why it was in the bookstore, since I'd never heard of the author before - and have read it at least a dozen times. A few other reviewers said it was confusing, but I found it fascinating. The author presents the story in pieces and... more info

Customer Review:

The people on the far side of the world in Outer Maroo, a small opal mining town in Australia, comfort themselves with a mantra: "if rain had come, things might have turned out differently". But the rains haven't come, the drought has. And the taciturn individuals who live in Outer Maroo watch... more info

Customer Review:
While not very long, this is a pretty ambitious book. It deals with political morality and individual responsibility. It speaks in the voice of several characters, and uses such literary devices as a narrator who stops to talk to the reader, acknowledges bias, and speculates on the truth of his... more info

There seems to be no end to the great stories that Mr. Hospital spins. In this, her fifth book, a young woman named Charade Ryan from the Australian rainforest travels to Canada, then to Boston in search of her English father Nicholas Truman. Her earthy mother, Bea Ryan, mother of ten children by as... more info

Customer Review:
Sometimes if I read a writer's books out of the order in which they were written, I think that had I read the first one first, I might not have read any further. This certainly would not have been the case with this fine, beautifullly written first novel by Janette Turner Hospital. It certainly is... more info

Customer Review:
This may be the best Hospital I've read. The title is from a line by T. S. Eliot and describes the patriarch of a family, Edward Carpenter, a retired school principal. The novel is set in a small town in Massachusetts around 1990 (though written in 1983)when Edward's wife is planning their fiftieth... more info
