DDay Review ![]()
I agree with the author of the recent Time review which found the book interesting and factual. I was especially interested in the increased amount of detail which the author compiled from various sources from both sides of the conflict. The maps of the battle scenes were appropriately placed. What made me realize that the author was British was the use of certain words such as \"stick\" for platoon and other turns of phrases. He along with other observers felt that Monty was a poor leader in that he refused...

Anthony Beevor is a great historian.
I have read all his books, but this one is very special to me as it happened in Normandy, where I,partly, grew up. I am very familiar with all the small towns, villages and hamlets mentionned in the book . I have travelled the small roads in a region which is today so quaint and peaceful.
Anthony Beevor ,as with his other books ,Spain,Berlin and Stalingrad, has the knack to intertwine the historical military ,sometimes rapid and brutal events, with the daily...
Great reading on a Key Event in History ![]()
This is a well-written, reader-friendly but richly-detailed account of World War Two's Normandy Invasion. It provides the reader with novel-like intimacy. Just about every aspect of D-Day, if not actually every aspect, is covered in depth.
The author and celebrated historian obviously had to climb a steep mountain of huge piles of research, as evident in the 43 pages of supportive endnotes, to write this 523 page book accurately.
To me, though, a historian worthy of the name has to do more than...
Antony Beevor does it again! ![]()
Antony Beevor has turned a horrific episode of the 2nd WW into a very interesting and suspenseful story. He provides a lot of detailed information from both sides (Allies and German) of the front and keeps the reader well oriented with numerous, detailed battle field maps. He enlivens the military history with many human interest anecdotes and insights into the characters of military leaders.

Traditionally I prefer my alternate history served up by Harry Turtledove versus William R. Forstchen. When pairing with Gingrich though Forstchen is remarkably competitive and engaging. Very good historical fiction that lets us see real people struggling in the fight. ![]()
In their books on Pearl Harbor, Gingrich and Forstchen played a fascinating \"what if\" game with history. Here, they use pretty straight historical fiction to tell the story of the Revolutionary War at the end of 1776, particularly the Battle of Trenton on December 25th and 26th. The time frame of the novel skips around for dramatic purposes, but is very easy to follow.
The authors weave their story around three characters: General George Washington, Thomas Paine, and Jonathan Van Dorn. Obviously, the...

To start with, I like to read historical novels, and have enjoyed David McCullough's books greatly. This is the first book I've read by Mr. Gingrich. I am only half way through To Try Men's Souls, and I take my hat off to you. Your book has renewed my faith in what this country was founded on. Giants once walked among us in the form of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams, and let us not forget the common soldiers. Where are our giants today? Our soldiers still fight with the same dedication and loyalty, and would probably leave bloody footprints in the snow if their duty called for it--but where...
