Customer Review: Books on this subject are hard to find. Shapiro is a American Jew who knows more about modern China than almost any Westerners, including armchair sinologists like Jonathan Spence. He writes with wonderful scholarship plus intimate knowledge about the country he loves.
Customer Review: Honestly, the bar for casebooks is pretty low. This one had a decent copy-editor, and does not have any obvious, serious mistakes thus far. It suggests good modes of analysis, and it's decently concise. Could use some explicit solutions to at least the early problems, though.
Customer Review: After reading Mr. Shapiro's "I Choose China", I have had much mixed feelings.
In the book, Mr. Shapiro's tone about Mao is almost identical as the "People's Daily" - the official Chinese newspaper of propaganda nature. He is positive about Deng XiaoPing and his successors as well.
