from Penguin (Non-Classics)
Price: $7.44

Customer Review:
I was floundering around, trying to decide what to read next. I spotted Mark Kurlansky's book on my shelf and realized it had been sitting there since 1997. "Holy mackerel", I thought, "I should have read that before now." I took it down, perched on my favorite char, and shad all my inhibitions... more info

2.Salt: A World HistorySalt: A World History
from Penguin (Non-Classics)
Price: $8.15

Customer Review:
Salt has an interesting history of formation and useage. Unfortunately we get a lot of the one and very little of the other. Looking at Mr Kurlansky's publishing history, we see that he is a food writer and this explains a lot.
I liked his The Basque History of the World: The Story of a Nation.... more info

Customer Review:
Kudos to Mark Kurlansky for his decision to present first hand accounts instead of giving his "interpretation." His introduction is excellent and gives an essential accounting for the reason that these fascinating pieces were written and collected.

4.The Big Oyster: History on the Half ShellThe Big Oyster: History on the Half Shell
from Random House Audio

Customer Review:
Pizza's, weiners, and spagehtti, but seafood? Before reading this book I had no idea that anyone (except the indians, and we all know what happened to them)aite anything from the waters around New York. Between the street run off, the overflowing sewers and being well chummed by the remains of... more info

6.[no image]The Basque History of the World
from Recorded Books

Customer Review:

This small book gives readers an introduction and overview of the Basque culture and examines how the group has survived for centuries in a region that straddles the border between northern Spain and France.
I learned a lot about a culture and region I previously knew nothing about, so... more info

7.NonviolenceNonviolence
from Random House Uk Ltd

Customer Review:
I learned an immense amount about non-violence from this book. Of course, we read about Ghandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. But the vast majority of the time is spent on less famed examples. We learn of non-violent resistance in Eastern Europe during the Cold War and under Nazi occupation during... more info

8.The Belly of Paris (Modern Library Classics)The Belly of Paris (Modern Library Classics)
from Modern Library

Customer Review:
The Belly of Paris (Oxford World's Classics)Who better than Zola to fictionalize the brutal life of the poor in Paris - and the destruction of the old Paris for the much-loved modern, straightened Paris - and their conflict with the bourgeoisie? Also gives a large taste of the old Les Halles... more info

9.The Story of SaltThe Story of Salt

Customer Review:
I ordered this book for my son, who loves science, because I loved the adult version so much.
It is a fantastic abbreviation. Mark Kurlansky was brilliant to make compelling but clear kids' versions of his already excellent publications!

10.1968 (Imago Mundi) (Spanish Edition)1968 (Imago Mundi) (Spanish Edition)
from Destino Ediciones
Price: $97.15

Customer Review:
This guy is really "stuck in the '60's", or rather what he thought the sixties were like when he was a naive youth. Many people tend to idealize their younger days, but to pass their fantasies off as history is a disgraceful act. It is also blatantly false and misleading. This author sounds and... more info
