Editorial Review:

6.8A, 0-2,500 RPM Variable Speed Reversing, Cement Siding Shear, For Cutting Fiber Cement Products, Ergonomic Handle With Soft Grips, Multi Position Belt Clip, Dust Sealed Switch, Aluminum Gear Housing, Magnesium Bearing Plate, Precision Cut Steel Gears, 100% Ball Bearings, 8' Cord.

Cutting cement board has always been a messy proposition, with dust flying everywhere. But here comes Porter-Cable's 6605 Cement Siding Shear, and the job's no problem.

The shears neatly make straight and curved cuts with a minimum radius of 7 inches -- a good, tight turn that's impossible with a circular saw. The waste kerf is just ¼ inch, and unlike cutting with a circular saw, there's hardly any dust at all. When the blades start to wear, it's easy enough to swap them from left to right until you've used all four sides of the blades to a 50 percent wear pattern.

The head rotates a complete 360 degrees to accommodate any cutting angle (so your body doesn't have to); the handle's got a nice, soft grip and the comfortable trigger has a lock-on button for easy-on-your-hand continuous cutting. Remodelers and contractors, we think you'll want to set aside your circular saws and reach for this shear when cement board needs to be cut.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Amazon.com Product Description
Whether you are a professional or a do-it-yourselfer, this 6.8 amp fiber/cement shear from Porter-Cable is a must have. It will cut any type of cement board up to 5/16"-thick. It makes cutting a breeze while it produces minimal dust. Due to its electronic variable-speed from 0 to 2,500 spm, cuts with this shear were much cleaner and accurate than with a circular saw. Although the blades are long-lasting, they are reversible and it is easy to flip when one side gets dull. This shear is comfortable even after a long days work thanks to its multi-position belt clip and multi-position soft-grip handle.

  • Useless. Chews up the siding and cuts are messy
Using the circular saw with a special blade was dusty, so we tried these shears and another brand. The shears sucked by comparison. The shears chew up the siding so much that every cut has to be cleaned up, wasting time. My advice is to use a circular saw with a fiber cement blade and wear a dust mask -- you will get clean cuts and go much more quickly. I wish I could return the shears.

  • Pretty darn good tool!
I had been using Fiber board blades quite some time for Hardi planks and backers. I decided to break down and get the Hardi shears because the dust from the blades was horrible. I was amazed at how well it worked. It is light weight, very easy to control and keep straight, even on rip cuts. The variable speed is very convenient. It also has a handy belt clip built in.
It seems relatively pricy considering it only has a 6.8 amp motor (maybe a drill motor, but is definitely adequate). I had trouble... more info

  • The only way to cut Hardi
I am a professional remodeler and recently took on a job where I was residing a house. This tool performs like a champ. This will be the only way I cut Hardiboard siding in the future. It is too hard on your saw and your lungs not to justify buying these shears, even if you are only doing one house. Not to mention, the circular saw blade you are supposed to use for Hardi is about $50 and the special dust collecting saws are usually over $400. I rented an old pair of shears for this job I was doing and was... more info

  • Great Product
I am not a contractor but have done plenty of DIY projects on many homes with family members who are. We bought this product to side a 2500 sq foot house and were able to do so in about 3-4 weekends with 3 people on the job. We tried cutting a few boards using a chop saw but the dust was pretty substantial. This tool does slow down the cutting a bit but is more maneuverable if you're cutting on the fly and also reduces dust substantially. This is important because the John Hardie website even contains... more info
