Editorial Review:
Even such complicated shapes as fingernail turning gouges, spoon carving gouges and oval skew chisels with a radiused edge are easily sharpened. And you can exactly replicate a previous sharpening in less than a minute. The water cooled slow turning grindstone is in perfect harmony with the physical laws governing the steel tool ensuring that the edge does not overheat and lose its hardness. You finish the sharpening process on the leather honing wheel, which lets you polish the edge to a razor sharpness with no need for bench stones. The TORMEK method is safe. At the low speed you can fully control the grinding operation. Since no sparks are produced, there is no risk to your eyes and you can safely use the machine in areas of high fire risk. For anyone who uses and works with tools enough to require a grinder, this model from Tormek is a well-designed, high-performance option. First and foremost, the Tormek Super Grind is water-cooled, removing one of the major obstacles to grinding: overheating your tool. With the water-cooling system, the wheel is able to turn at a much higher revolution, allowing for more-accurate, cleaner results. With its excellent bracket and clamp system, the Tormek works well with varying kinds and sizes of blades, but keep in mind that it will need additional accessory brackets for some tools. The grinder comes with an aluminum oxide grindstone and a leather honing wheel, and both connect to the motor at the same time so you won't have to switch wheels on the machine. The unit uses a 115-volt motor and reaches up to 90 rpm, which is plenty of power for most uses. In fact, we were impressed with the overall burliness of the tool--it's definitely intended for heavy-duty use. Only the on/off button was a little unwieldy, but it's well protected and should hold up. This Tormek is certainly a great machine for sharpening and finely honing gardening tools, woodworking tools, and more. An instruction video and book are included. --Jonathon Tudor
Customer Reviews:
Avg. Customer Rating: 5.0 / 5.0 Yes, It Really Is Worth The Money I'm a long-time doubter here. My primary hand tools are a set of Japanese chisels, some Pfeil carving tools, and a number of Lie-Nielsen plances of which I'm inordinateld proud. I have an entire library of sharpening stones and have been completely egotistical about hand sharpening and honing. In other words, I was an edge snob. That it could take me two days to sharpen everything after a sizeable project was besides the point. Age, and the addition of another set of exotic chisels, finally did me in.... more info Tormek Grinder I've been using the grinder with a few of the different jigs and I can say it does, indeed, put a great edge on tools. I did find out that nothing is as easy as you might expect. The grinder does take a little practice in setting up and using the various jigs. The jigs are repeatable which is a big strength. That is, once set up correctly, you can repeat the bevels without even thinking about it. I gave this tool five stars because it does what it claims to do and does it very well. My plane blades and... more info A great sharpening system but a bit expensive I have been using this system for about 9 months and I am very satisfied. This machine works wonders on straight edge blades such as chisels. But beware, sharpening curved blades, such as knives and plane blades, requires practice to acquire a certain finese. For example, I sharpen my hand plane blades so that they have a slight to substantial curve on them. My scrub plane has a substanial curve while my smoothing planes have a very subtle curve. The curve eliminates the "edge bite" that results when a... more info overall pretty decent A well made machine with good documentation that's excessive in some areas, and weak in others. There's no decent info on breaking in the stroping wheel or how much paste to really use. You'll need to trial and error that part. The grading stone accessory is a must, it's a scam that one is not included. You cannot sharpen a knife with the normal grit "settings" that the wheel ships with. It's sort of hard to strope a longer blades beause they grinding wheel gets in the way because of its... more info
