    Editorial Review:

Are you intrigued with the exhilaration of whitewater? An intermediate boater looking for that elusive breakthrough? Or a seasoned veteran wanting a paddling tune-up? Whatever your ability, you'll enjoy this dynamic instructional video. World Champion Kent Ford, videographer John Davis, and experienced whitewater instructors combine their talents to help give you the kayaker's edge.

This fast paced video reveals the techniques and unlocks the secrets of smooth surfing and easy playing. Great examples explain water reading, particularly holes and hydraulics. Advanced stroke techniques, as well as rolling and bracing are demonstrated and explained. Slow motion underwater shots of rolling enhance the presentation. Enders, sidesurfing and other playboating moves are demystified. 58 minutes.

Jump into the river and start having fun with The Kayaker's Edge. This instructional video, written and produced by 1992 Olympic forerunner and announcer Kent Ford, paces you through basic and intermediate techniques of white-water kayaking. The style is informal, often humorous, but the skillful camera work catches nuances of motion and points of view you'd never see with a live instructor. Of course, no video can replace live instruction (safety first!), but watching before and between lessons can greatly improve your learning time on the river. You'll see rolling, bracing, side surfing, and ruddering, as well as basic play on easier rapids. The slow-motion and underwater shots alone are worth the price of the tape, but the added verbal instruction and footage of kayakers surfing through all levels of rapids make The Kayaker's Edge essential for the white-water enthusiast. --Rob Lightner

    • Every kayaker should at least review this video
This is an old school training video, but the concepts are still valid. The boats may be a bit larger, however, when learning the strokes and carves this is where you will find the tactics.

This video covers the roll too. Sweep and C-to-C. Not in depth, but enough to study from. It also covers eddy turns and peel outs as well as carving and other necessary techniques.

Just beyond the very basics of sitting in the darned boat, Kent Ford's video was quite helpful to me a few years back. Returning from an intro to white water kayaking clinic, this video provided plenty of basic river reading and playing skills: entering and exiting eddies, nailing that roll and slidding onto surfing waves. It's not substitute for hands-on training. But it's the kind of video you can watch in pieces -- week nights -- and then hit the water on and work on these basics on the weekends. And,... more info
