Editorial Review:

A magical train ride on Christmas Eve takes a boy to the North Pole to receive a special gift from Santa.

One couldn't select a more delightful and exciting premise for a children's book than the tale of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve only to have Santa Claus sweep by and take him on a trip with other children to the North Pole. And one couldn't ask for a more talented artist and writer to tell the story than Chris Van Allsburg. Allsburg, a sculptor who entered the genre nonchalantly when he created a children's book as a diversion from his sculpting, won the 1986 Caldecott Medal for this book, one of several award winners he's produced. The Polar Express rings with vitality and wonder.

  • The Polar Express
The theme plus the art work of this book are well worth having. To know that it developed into a really frist class animated video with a lesson which is ageless is truly worth thinking about.

  • Excellent Caldecott book
This one deserves every award it gets. The text is magical and lyrical, the illustrations are gorgeous, and the story is simple and beautiful. My kids LOVE it.
This book is so much better than the DVD. It is hard to believe they are telling the same story. The DVD is full of the conductor, the tramp, the engineers, the wild ride. The book has none of that. The book simply tells about the journey, the gift, and the belief.
I get a little lump in my throat every time I get to the end. It is a... more info

Young or old, everyone should have a copy of "The Polar Express" in their home. Inspiring and uplifting in a simplistic way.

  • Every child needs this book
This book is a great child's book. We took our grandsons to the Polar Express in Bryson City, NC this past weekend. We gave them the book on the train ride, and Santa autographed the books for them. They both love the story. Going for a Christmas train ride on the Polar Express was a fantastic experience for them. It made the book so real.
