This text introduces students to the major structural and non-structural systems of building in wide use today, and gives them the background they need to knowledgeably choose among building systems. For each system covered, Allen shows the evolutionary development, the properties of its major materials and the possibilities and limitations of the building method. Approximately 300 drawings and 700 photos enhance the discussions, and key progressions of construction operations are illustrated with sequential drawings or photos when possible. A set of black and white slides of illustrations from the text, and an instructor's manual with a script for the slides are available.
